Book Brief | Jun 2023

Beloved author Cormac McCarthy whose best known works include The Road, Blood Meridian, and No Country for Old Men has died at the age of 89.

His son John confirmed that he died at home from natural causes.

His works include 12 novels, two plays, five screenplays and three short stories, most of which either feature a violent America or are set in post-apocalyptic worlds.

McCarthy was born in Rhode Island in 1933 and went on to publish his first novel The Orchard Keeper in 1965. But it wasn’t until 1992, that he achieved commercial success with All The Pretty Horses, which won the National Book Award. And in 2007 he won the Pulitzer prize for The Road.

Since the announcement of his death, his contemporaries have remembered him, with author Stephen King writing on twitter: ‘Cormac McCarthy, maybe the greatest American novelist of my time, has passed away at 89. He was full of years and created a fine body of work, but I still mourn his passing.’

McCarthy was married three times, and is survived by his two children Cullen and John.
